Air Source Heat Pumps

Air source heat pumps are one of the latest home heating solutions that come with impeccable green credentials. In the same way that refrigerators extract heat from the air inside, air source heat pumps extract heat from the air outside and use this to heat your home. Even outside temperatures as low as -15 degrees can be used within such systems.

There are two main types of air source heat pumps. The first uses the heat from the air outside to heat water which is then pumped around your home to aid in heating. It is suggested that such systems are better suited to underfloor radiant heating systems rather than wall mounted radiator central heating set ups.

The second variety uses a straightforward air to air system which extrapolates hot air from outside and uses a system of fans to circulate it inside your home. Both types of air source heat pumps require nothing but electricity to run them and they are far more efficient than other electric heating alternatives. They also require no natural gas or oil to fuel them, so they are suitable for use in areas which lack such amenities. In addition this allows the systems to be very compact as there is no need for fuel storage.

Because air source heat pumps use air from outside, you will need to have a suitable outside area for the unit to be installed in. These systems also require a particularly well insulated home to make the most of their operation as they generate less heat than gas or oil powered boilers, so preservation of heat is much more important. People should consider an air source heat pump system if they are planning on replacing an older system running on electricity or coal.
